Hard drive repair in Plymouth. One word, two jobs; mending a disk and reading it back are not the same work.

The first question is nearly always the same, and a choice hides in it. Mending the hardware and reading what sits on it are separate jobs; only one ends with your files in your hands. Electronics and firmware genuinely come back. Heads, motors and platters do not — they hold together for one careful pass, then retire. Disks reach the bench from Plymouth, Tavistock and Saltash over the Tamar, and from Truro, Falmouth and Camborne; every job ends the same way, on media bought new for you.

Where a repair ends and recovery begins.

Electronics: a proper repairA disk that seems utterly dead has usually lost its board — a shorted TVS diode, failed electronics, or a USB bridge chip that has stopped answering. Every one of those is repairable in the ordinary sense of the word, which is the cheerful part.
Firmware: repairable, given the kitA corrupted translator, or one broken module in the service area, will leave a mechanically sound disk announcing 0GB — or missing from the bus altogether. Structures like those are reached with purpose-built equipment. No download goes near them.
Mechanics: a single readA borrowed head stack, a jammed spindle freed, heads lifted clear of the surface they have settled onto — each buys just enough working life for one complete copy. The mechanism does not outlast the job it was woken for.
Board swapping no longer worksEach mechanism is calibrated once on the production line, and the numbers that come from it are kept in a ROM soldered to that drive's own board. Bolt on a stranger's board and the heads answer with noise, not data. The shortcut died about two decades ago.

Whatever arrives is booked in under a case number on the day it reaches the bench. An engineer then works out the actual fault, and that part is free. You get a plain answer on what can come off the drive and what cannot, followed by one price in writing. Nothing further happens until you have read it and agreed.

Your ROM comes across to a rebuilt board. Service-area modules are corrected one at a time. Donor mechanics go in where the originals have given out. Every step serves a single aim: one continuous read of the surfaces, start to finish.

Return the contents, not the disk

Everything that comes off is verified, listed for you, and put onto media bought new for your job. A drive was only ever a container. If light duty is still left in it, we say so; if the mechanism is done, we say that instead.

Thinking it over costs you nothing. Everything the drive gave up is listed for you before any invoice exists, and the bill only follows your go-ahead. Files travel back on media bought in for your job, with return carriage paid at this end, and the case stays on the bench until you confirm they open on your own computer.

The faults we see most

  • Few callers really want a repair — what they want is the contents, not a disk that spins again. We work to the outcome you need rather than the word you happened to use, and say plainly which of the two your drive is a candidate for.
  • The substitution nobody mentions — a laptop back from a 'repair' and running sweetly has usually had a blank disk fitted. Ask where the old one went, and ask it before you settle the invoice.
  • Electrical damage is the cheapest kind — a spike takes out the board and leaves the recording surfaces untouched, which makes these the fastest work the bench sees.
  • Fresh heads are not a cure — what they buy is reading time rather than reliability, and anybody claiming different is booking in your next loss.

Set down here, and stuck to: the electronics repair, and so does the firmware. Heads and motors get patched far enough to last one copy and no further. A platter scored through its coating reads back nothing — not on this bench, not on anyone's, whatever an advertisement claims. That has not shifted, and disks badged IBM, Hitachi, HGST and Fujitsu keep arriving from Plymouth, Saltash, Tavistock and Truro. The laptop came back from the shop working: a new disk fitted, nothing on it. The old one had been given up on, and it sat clicking in a drawer in a Plymouth student flat. It went on the bench for a donor head stack. Inside two days the essays and the pictures went onto the shop's new disk.

Questions that come up most weeks.

Can a failed hard drive really be mended?

In part. The electronics are a genuine repair and so is the firmware — a board rebuilt, a service area straightened out module by module. Anything that turns is a different matter. Donor heads are fitted for one purpose: to last a single pass over the surfaces. The mechanism is done afterwards and does not travel home. Your files do, on new media.

Is it a repair I need, or is it a recovery?

A repair concerns the hardware, and the owner walks away with a working device. A recovery concerns the contents, and the hardware counts as expendable. Once a disk has properly failed, only the second answer is an honest one. That is how a laptop returns from a shop quickly and quietly with none of your work left on it.

Won't a swapped circuit board sort it out?

Hardly ever, and never on its own. A small ROM on the board stores adaptive figures measured against your mechanism and no other. Carry that chip across to the replacement and the disk reads. Leave it behind and the heads report noise. Moving it is soldering work, and it wants the proper bench and the proper kit.

Disks are cheap. Why spend this much on one?

Cheap disks are exactly why that comparison falls apart. Nobody here is selling you storage. The bill covers what was living on the disk that stopped, given back to you on hardware that runs. Put the same sum into nursing a failed mechanism along and you are left holding a part nobody would rely on.

A drive that stays switched off gets no worse.
