TR7 and TR8 · Newquay and the coast

Data recovery in Newquay. The season is short; the bookings live on one machine, usually with no copy.

Newquay had 23,626 people in the parish at the 2021 census and 24,545 in the built-up area, making it the largest built-up area in Cornwall, and a permanent population of roughly 25,000 can pass 100,000 at the height of summer. It was a pilchard port long before it was a resort, and the harbour still works. Round that sit the hotels and lets, the surf schools and coasteering operators, Boardmasters and its contractors each August, Cornwall Airport Newquay with its business park, the zoo and the college, and the Duchy's Nansledan development on the east side. All of it runs on booking databases, tills, safety records and photographs, and most of that sits on one office disk. No counter exists to visit, here or anywhere. It travels by post, and the look costs nothing.

What shows upWhy it ends up hereWhat to do
A hotel office PC that will not start of a morningRoom allocations, guest records and years of bookingsLeave it switched off. The disk is imaged first.
A letting agent's server that has stopped mountingOwner accounts, tenancy files and the inventory photographySend the disks bare, each marked with the bay it held
An external drive of safety inspection recordsPaperwork that has to be produced whenever it is asked forStop using it the moment a click appears
A card carrying a whole summer of photographsBeach, wedding and event work, none of it repeatableDo not reformat it. The card goes to us untouched.
A site recorder that cannot see its own diskThe cameras write to it every hour of every dayUnplug it, remove the disk, and send the disk
Getting it to us: the drive goes to the intake lab as a tracked, insured parcel, with a printed shipping form in the box beside it. Nothing is charged for the journey home. Packing is set out on the contact page.

Four things worth knowing here.

Why the post is the answerNo counter exists here, nor anywhere else. By road it is the A392 out to the A30 at Indian Queens and then a long run east, on a road that fills up right through the summer. The railway is a branch to Par, not a route to the lab. So the parcel makes the journey and you do not.
The business sits on one diskHotels, guest houses, surf schools and caterers mostly work off a single office machine, often on software installed a decade ago. Bookings, takings, guest records and the accounts share the one disk. When it begins to sound different, that is your warning.
Tell us when your season startsA drive that fails in March is not the same job as a November failure, and it is not treated as one. Tell us your opening date, and what is queued behind it.
What it costsAssessment is free. The price goes in writing before work starts, and it does not move afterwards. Cards and sticks begin at £250 plus VAT, a hard disk at £300 plus VAT. On most jobs, no recovery means no fee. Return postage is on us.

What the coast asks.

Do you cover Crantock, Porth and the parks?

Yes. TR7 and TR8 both count, which takes in Porth, Crantock over the Gannel, Watergate Bay, St Mawgan and Nansledan, along with the airport business park. Your address changes neither the price nor the queue, since nothing is collected in any case. Media travels to the Bristol lab by tracked post and returns the same way, at our expense.

The bookings are on a PC that no longer boots. Are they gone?

Usually not. Nearly all booking software stores its database as ordinary files on that machine's own disk, so the disk is what matters and the PC is not. Reinstall nothing, and do not let a shop try its luck first. Send us the drive, or the whole machine, and name the program it runs.

The office machine has died and we open at Easter. Can it be hurried?

Say so when you book. Urgent cases get imaged first rather than fitted round the rest of the day, and on this coast that matters — a failure in March is a different problem from one in November. There is still one fixed price, in writing, before any work begins, and a firm date once the drive has been read.

Posting from here, how long does it take?

Assessment happens the day a parcel arrives, and the fixed price follows straight after it. Logical faults — deleted files, a damaged file system, a card that has been formatted — usually come back within a few working days. Anything mechanical has to wait on donor parts, so it runs longer. The first thing you are told is which of the two it is.

Next door to Newquay, on the same terms.

Post it from Newquay and we take it from there.

Keep it powered down. Tell us how it failed. Nothing is agreed until the free diagnosis has said what the fault is.
