The Repair Shop Had Got It Right.
He telephoned a day before the parcel got here. Over at St Austell a chair arm had snagged the cable and hauled the Seagate off a desk in the middle of a transfer. Why it happens.
They were right, and being right gets nobody past the door of a clean-air bench. The height at which a head flies is settled during manufacture and measured in nanometres. Once its arm is bent, no work at a bench will bring that arm back to true. Either the drive takes a stack matched to it from the same production run, or the job ends there. All of that can be stated before the parcel arrives. What the discs look like cannot. Tip a drive over while it is reading and a slider may touch the coating, which leaves marking to be worked around rather than read through. Which of the two applies stays unknown until the lid comes off, so a fixed price offered beforehand is guesswork wearing a number.

How it ran.
Look at the discs before you promise anybody anything
Magnification bore out their verdict: one arm standing higher than its fellows, and an untrue stack reads nothing whatever. What remained in doubt was the condition of the discs. A slider had touched down at some point and marked the second platter with a pale ring — light, not the deep scoring that ends a drive there and then. The service log filled in the rest. Long before he paid anybody for this unit, it had been quietly retiring sectors.
Fitting a stack into a chassis with no space in it
A slim Seagate portable has next to no room inside it, and a drive assembled that tightly is particular about what it will accept. Family and firmware generation both had to agree, and the number on the label eliminates a handful of candidates while settling nothing. One suitable unit was on our shelf already. Under laminar flow it went in, the disc reached speed and held it, and every head received a grade of its own ahead of any bulk reading.
Clean surfaces to begin with, the ring afterwards
Clean surfaces went first, in a single run from one end to the other, while the fitted stack was still new. Afterwards came the marked band, handled lightly: short passes, few retries, a rest between them. It released a fair proportion of what it held, then released nothing further, and we left it there.
How it ended up.
Almost everything travelled back on fresh media — years of photographs taken on jobs, checked and filed under the addresses they belong to. The report was as plain about the gaps. A folder from his first trading summer lay beneath the marked ring and stayed beneath it. Those pictures mattered for one particular reason: a warranty argument with a customer. Weighed against a secondhand drive dragged onto the floor mid-transfer with no copy anywhere, he came out of it well enough.
