Fifteen Years of Work, and Not One Light.

It happened over half term, at home on the Isles of Scilly, with coursework moderation still ahead of her. One pocket drive carried fifteen years of teaching design and technology: the schemes of work, all the CAD, film of everything my classes have made. And it had stopped dead — no light, no movement, it might as well be a brick. The obvious checks were behind her: four cables, both computers at home, two more in the department. Nobody at school could get any further, and she was advised to leave it alone. Into the post it went.

Why it happens.

Three faults can leave a drive showing no sign of life, and with the case shut none of them can be told from the others. There is the little board that translates between USB and the SATA connector on the disk. There is the firmware, which is written on the platters and not held in a chip. And there is the mechanism, either turning or seized. The three of them cost wildly different amounts to put right. Cables and ports were already eliminated, which left one step: open the shell and stand the naked disk on a bench. As it happens the most frequent of the three is also the cheapest, and that is the one to test first.

Shell off, and straight onto a SATA port

Out of its shell and on a SATA port, the disk was answering within a minute. Spindle at speed. Model string right. Every service command acknowledged. That silence had been the work of the bridge board and nothing besides. Since the board is the only reason a SATA disk can speak USB at all, its death takes away the light, the handshake and every other outward sign in one go.

Copy it over a connection that still works

With the dead board out of the path, the drive read as though nothing had ever been wrong with it. Rated speed from beginning to end, no read errors logged anywhere, and the factory defect list sitting precisely where the firmware expected it. A bridge fault on a bench ought to look like that, and this one did, start to finish.

Hand it back on hardware that works

Written out to a new disk, the folder tree arrived exactly as she had built it. Year 9 still sits under Schemes of Work, exactly where it always sat. The moderation folders are where she goes to look for them. Nothing renamed, nothing swept together into a single directory. All that has changed is the box on the desk.

How it ended up.

Fifteen years travelled home intact, filed as she had filed it, checked before the parcel was taped up. Not one page of her work had ever lived on the part that failed, and that part can be replaced for a few pounds.

In short: A pocket drive that goes quiet is generally saying something about its casing rather than your files. The USB end packs up. The platters carry on holding everything, unaware.
