Light Showing, and Not a Sound From Inside.

Why it happens.
An LED like that one hangs off the power rail and testifies to a single fact: volts got as far as the enclosure. About the disc it knows nothing. Take away the spin-up sound and three suspects remain inside the shell. Perhaps the heads are down on a recorded surface and stuck fast there. Perhaps the bearing has seized in the spindle. Or perhaps the board is not issuing any start instruction at all. Sit the thing on a bench supply and read the draw. All three pull a distinct shape, so telling them apart takes minutes. He had another cable standing by to try. It would not have altered anything.

How it ran.
Meter before anything else
Off the USB lead, onto a metered supply, and it did what no laptop can ever show you. The trace climbed hard as the motor took hold, then went level against whatever was pinning the pack, and the second run drew the same shape. A dead board sits low and even the whole way through; this did not. One trace was all it took to locate the fault.
Lift the heads away from the data
Under clean air the mechanics told the same story the meter had. It went over during a write, so nothing resembling a park instruction ever got to the actuator. Both heads were sitting on recorded surface, holding the pack exactly where rotation had ceased. Each was removed separately, and the strip of platter beneath it went under a stereo microscope, because a head left lying will grind its way down into the data.
One spin-up, and copy the lot
Freed of them, the motor came up immediately and the drive identified itself properly. Every surface then copied in one continuous run, with nothing opened along the way and nothing browsed. A mechanism that has jammed on you once can do it again without a word of warning.
How it ended up.
The platters were unmarked, which is generally what happens when nobody keeps trying a drive. Everything went home: every reel he had put through the scanner, every slide as well, checked onto fresh media. The S3 itself was scrapped. The films are held in three places now, one of the sets by his sister.
