Five Attempts, and Then Quiet.
That last backup never reached the end. She was mid-move to the Isles of Scilly, the lead caught and came away part-way through, and afterwards the drive spent a whole winter shut in a drawer — twelve years of camcorder footage transferred onto it, along with her mother’s albums, scanned one page at a time. In March she connected it again. The laptop still gives its bleep when I plug it in
, but Windows offers her nothing beyond safe removal. A drive letter never once appeared. What the drive does is worth counting: it has five goes and then gives up

Why it happens.
There are two machines inside that small case. The disk is one. The second is a board whose task is translating the disk into terms a USB port can follow; it runs a processor, carries memory, and forms its own view of how well it is doing. In this instance the board was entirely healthy. Hence the bleep from the laptop, hence an entry among the devices, and hence Windows offering safe removal for a piece of hardware from which not one byte has ever been read. What lies behind it never started at all. A fixed ration of attempts is allowed for bringing the platters to speed, and once firmware has used them up it halts rather than forcing current through a coil to no purpose. Counting whirrs means counting spent attempts. That is a limit you are listening to, not an error code.

One further attempt, this time with a meter on the supply
A single attempt on the bench, current limited, told us nearly the whole story. Five rises in draw, each of them the motor pushing against whatever had hold of it. Nothing anywhere in the trace to say the platters ever reached speed. Then firmware gave up. A spindle behaves that way only when something solid is in its path. As things turned out, what she had tried at home made nothing worse.
Lid off, and lift the heads
With the lid away the story told itself. The lead came out during a copy, so the heads never got as far as their ramp. They settled on the platter, and a winter spent in a cold drawer stuck them fast. Both were eased loose by hand, and each contact mark was examined under a microscope before any power reached the motor.
A single read, start to finish, on its own electronics
A My Passport keeps its encryption in the USB electronics rather than down on the platters, so those electronics stayed wired in with the imaging hardware behind them — precisely the route WD designed this data to take. One pass carried the read from the opening sector through to the last, skipping nothing. Once a head has bonded itself to a surface, nobody gives it a second cold start.
How it ended up.
Nothing was missing: the transferred footage, every scanned album page, all of it. Fresh media carried it home, along with a single piece of advice. Where the second copy shares a roof with the first, you do not really have two copies. The Passport has been retired and will do no more work.
