Monday It Was Fine. Every Client I Have Sits on It.

There was no warning of any kind. The drive had been in daily use in a Tavistock bookkeeping practice for three years — not a minute’s bother out of it — and then I switched it off at teatime on the Monday, and by Tuesday it had gone. Its light came on exactly as it always did, and the case was humming in my hand, just as normal. Disk Management listed nothing, on any port anywhere in the office. She had worked through two cables and three restarts before ringing. About the contents she was direct: all the books I do for people are on there.

Why it happens.

Two facts settled most of this before the parcel had even arrived. The disk was turning, and nothing in the office would list it. A failing disk generally gives some warning. It slows. It develops a noise nobody has heard before. It disappears and returns over a fortnight, then goes for good. This one sounded like an ordinary working day right up to the moment it stopped existing. So the fault is not in the mechanism; it belongs to the electronics standing between disk and computer, and in a pocket enclosure that means the bridge board almost every time. A year-end fell due inside the same fortnight as two VAT returns. One of those two answers cost her an awkward week; the other left a practice holding nothing at all. It went straight to the front.

Out of its enclosure that day, because the diary allowed nothing else

Inside the hour the parcel was open and the disk itself sat on the bench. Every question put to it got a proper answer. Speed held steady, firmware replied at once, and each head returned a clean read. The mechanism was therefore in the clear, and by elimination the bridge board held the fault; imaging began before lunch.

The key sits on the board, not on the disk

The encryption key on these units is stored on the USB board alone, so a failed board cannot simply be thrown out and replaced with another. Only the USB side of this one had gone. Given power straight off the bench it still responded, so it was left in circuit while the imaging ran, and the volume came up as though nothing had ever gone wrong.

Verify in whatever order the diary dictates

Her deadlines arrived by email and the checking ran to that order precisely. Those two VAT sets with the nearest dates got read one ledger after another and went back before anything else. The rest was verified behind them. A filing deadline has no interest in the whole drive — only in the right folders arriving on time.

How it ended up.

No ledger was missing. Both returns were filed a day early. One thing is different now: every evening, before she shuts the laptop, the live client files go across to a second drive.

In short: A bridge board can fail with a completely healthy disk sitting behind it. Anything a client is paying for belongs on two drives rather than one.
