The Plug Would Only Ever Work Held One Way.

He runs a mail-order business single-handed out of a back room in Kingsbridge, and every order he has ever taken lives on that Iomega. Six weeks it had been waking up only when the barrel plug was nudged over towards the left, something he had long stopped noticing. On Monday it was stone cold, no light, no sign of anything. He fetched a spare lead and it made not the slightest difference. Then he arrived with the pair of them in one carrier bag and repeated the question he had asked on the telephone: has the adapter shorted out my board?

Why it happens.

It has. There were two electrical faults running side by side. A barrel plug making contact at only one angle throws a small spark at that contact whenever it shifts. An adapter that has nearly finished its working life delivers dips and overshoots where twelve steady volts ought to be. All of that lands on the board inside the drive, which is exactly where it is designed to land. Its protection diode takes what it can, then shorts and drags the rail to earth. The board dies. Behind it, the discs know nothing about any of this.

The adapter gets tested as well

Both went under load. The adapter's output wandered and overshot as soon as anything asked current of it, which is exactly what he had suspected. As for the drive, its twelve-volt rail measured a dead short to earth, with the small sharp-edged burn of a spike sitting alongside. Ordinary ageing does not leave a mark like that.

Change the components, keep the chip

Burnt components came off and new ones went on, while the original ROM stayed exactly where it had always sat. That chip holds calibration figures belonging to this one mechanism. Take it away and the electronics have no way to interpret whatever the heads pass up to them.

Clean supply, and then one pass through

Given a regulated supply, the drive behaved as though the six weeks had never occurred. Defect tables came out at the first request and the whole disk crossed at an even rate. Electrical faults generally do run that way. The harm stays in the electronics.

How it ended up.

Nothing at all had gone. His own check was to pick a year, list every order taken in it, and add them up. The totals agreed, year after year, right back to the start. Into the bin went the adapter, and he had his answer in writing.

In short: When a connector only works held at an angle, it is the adapter talking, not the socket. Keep humouring it and the drive will follow it out.
