I Had the Cover Off Looking for Stuck Heads.
He owned up to the worst of it before the parcel arrived. One evening a storm sat over Stoke and cut the electricity on his street twice inside ten minutes. Afterwards his desktop's WD Blue would only tick once a second, and that was it

Why it happens.
Drives get opened because the drive carries on running afterwards, and that is where the trap lies. Modern disks are sealed assemblies whose steel cover forms part of the seal rather than a lid. Underneath it heads fly a few nanometres above platters at speed, in a gap narrower than anything floating about a kitchen. Undo the screws and nothing visibly goes wrong that night. The cost of it turns up later on. Whatever the electricity destroyed stays destroyed, and a film of household dust now covers the surfaces your photographs are written onto.

Clean the surfaces before a spindle turns
His next move was the right one: no power to it, screws replaced, drive bagged. Under the microscope the top platter was carrying a fair amount — grit, plus fibres from a jumper or a tea towel, the sort of thing a breather filter would never have let through. All of it was removed before current reached the spindle. Spin a dirty platter and each particle turns into a cutter under the head.
Then measure what the surge had destroyed
Only a clean surface reads honestly. Heads, motor and platters came back sound, which left the electronics, and one part of them: a motor driver chip that the surge had killed. A drive unable to reach speed will retry roughly once every second, and through a metal case that retrying sounds a great deal like a head fault. His alarm was fair enough. What he was hearing was a drive misdescribing itself.
Board on, and then read it gently
On went a donor board of matching revision, with the ROM carried over from the burnt one — lacking that chip, a replacement knows nothing about which drive it has been fitted to. The read then went ahead slowly, retries capped, on the basis that room air had already reached those surfaces and no process reverses that. It got all the way through even so.
How it ended up.
Every scan came home — three winters of photographs of Stoke and the people who live there. Quite how near he came to losing them was more than we said at the time. He keeps two copies today, and those Torx bits are back in a drawer.
