A Quarter of an Hour, and Then Nothing.
Insulation was going into a loft in Peverell. Years of boxes came down, and inside one of them, wound up in old leads, sat the Iomega. Fifteen minutes was all it gave. It mounted, folders appeared, it opened two or three of the slides Grandad scanned
— and then it dropped off the desktop halfway through a double-click. Nothing she did afterwards would read it. Every machine gave the same verdict, corrupted and unreadable

Why it happens.
‘Corrupted’ is Windows telling you a read came back wrong. It names a symptom and diagnoses nothing whatever. A better clue came from the drive, which quit part-way through a read, and timing of that kind points at a tired mechanism rather than at magnetism leaking out of the platters. Moving parts do not enjoy standing idle for years on end. Oil migrates, bearings settle where they were left, sliders lose their edge. Ask a drive in that condition for one long uninterrupted read and you have picked the worst possible opening move.

How it ran.
No more USB, and no more prodding at it
That drive saw no USB port again. Bench power only, and the firmware read before anything else, since what the firmware says settles the order of everything that follows. The grown defect list already held plenty of entries, with very few spares remaining. One measured pass over the whole surface, then, and no browsing of folders beforehand to see what was there.
Slow settings, for a drive that had stood still
The imager was told to take its time. Reduced read rate, generous timeouts, and a pause between zones so nothing had the chance to get warm. On those settings most of the surface came off quietly, and almost every error in the log belonged to a single head across one narrow band.
Mend the ‘corruption’ on the copy, never on the original
Seen from the image, that frightening word turned out to mean very little. The weak head had returned part of the filesystem's own bookkeeping and lost the remainder. NTFS keeps duplicates of a good deal of that, and the duplicates filled the gaps, so folders came back with the right names on them and the right dates. What the head had kept for good was a handful of scans.
How it ended up.
Research, old accounts and slides were opened one by one and checked. Nine of the scans came back incomplete. Every one of the nine appears in the report under its own name, and nothing was rounded off. That Iomega will not be going back up the loft ladder. Two drives hold the archive now, and both are in use.
