There Was Nothing Wrong With the Disk.

When a surveyor in Saltash wound his practice up in 2012, the whole scanned client archive went onto an Iomega drive roughly a year old at the time. Power still gets to it. There is a light on it and I can hear it running, he said. All the same, not one machine lists it as a drive. A shop took a look and got nowhere. He left that counter having fixed on the grimmest explanation available, and he was certain of it: the disc inside has shattered.

Why it happens.

Two products share that plastic box, and their lifespans differ. At the back is an ordinary SATA disk, the same as any desktop tower would hold. In front sits a small board turning SATA into USB, made as cheaply as possible and cooled by nothing but the air that drifts by. So a unit that powers up, hums, and shows up nowhere earns suspicion in a set order: the bridge, then the firmware, then the mechanism. Shattered platters belong at the very bottom. A diagnosis exists to put the frightening explanation to the test, not to agree with it.

Four screws, and the disk onto a port

Four screws out and the Seagate Barracuda was free, sitting on a bench SATA port. Thirty seconds put an end to his theory. It reached speed, returned its full model string, declared the right capacity, and answered vendor commands without hesitation. That worrying noise had been a healthy drive resonating through thin plastic.

Read the logs before ringing him back

Drives can look well and still be quietly finishing, so nobody telephoned him until the reallocated-sector count had been read, and the grown defect list with it. Neither held any surprise for a disk of that age which had never been worked hard. Sample reads taken across every zone came back first time, with nothing needing a retry.

Full-rate image, then name the culprit

First sector to last, the image came off clean at the drive’s rated speed. Nothing needed coaxing, nothing was retried, no new defects appeared. One component was therefore left carrying the blame. Age had finished off the bridge board; the disk on the other side of it had simply gone on working.

How it ended up.

Scans were opened from every year the practice traded, and none of them was short of anything. New media carried the recovery back to him. His old Seagate has gone into a better enclosure and does light work now as the second copy. Shattered platters were not mentioned again.

In short: The frightening explanation is nearly always the wrong one. On an external drive of this vintage the part that gives out is the bridge board, and what sits behind it is usually fine.
