The Laptop Was Done For. The Disk Was Not.
On a Tuesday evening the 2012 MacBook Pro went quiet, and an hour later its owner was at a kitchen table in Mutley with all ten base screws out. Nothing lighting on the magnetic connector. No start-up chime. I have tried two chargers and it responds to neither
. Teacher training, a placement portfolio due inside the month, and no appetite for paying anybody to write him an estimate: with a teardown guide open beside him, the Toshiba 500GB was free before midnight, on the reasoning that what I need is sitting on the disk rather than in the laptop

Why it happens.
Two chargers and no reaction from either points directly at the power path, and storage does not lie on that path. Power reaches a drive at the very end of the chain rather than partway along it, so a charging circuit that has failed leaves the disk unpowered and otherwise entirely unharmed. One genuine unknown was left: thirteen years of running almost daily. Age of that sort is something you can measure rather than guess at, so it was measured before anybody told him anything.

How it ran.
Thirteen years earns a disk no benefit of the doubt
No USB caddy was involved anywhere. The disk was questioned at firmware level, where self-flattery ends: SMART log, reallocation counters, the grown defect list, and then test reads starting at the outer tracks and working in. Every result was dull, which is precisely what you hope for here — a small number of remapped sectors, steady timings, and a mechanism in better order than its owner had feared.
Healthy media still goes behind the blocker
Working media gets handled exactly as failing media does. With a disk in this state the blocker adds no time worth measuring, and it disposes of any question raised afterwards: the drive went out of here in the condition it came in, and the log says so.
The remainder of the work happens on the clone
The volume opened straight from the image in UFS Explorer, with names, folder tree and dates just as he had described. Nobody went near the MacBook again. There was no reason to.
How it ended up.
He had his portfolio and his placement evidence a fortnight ahead of the deadline. Putting the charging circuit right belongs to a different trade altogether. The Toshiba, now tested and with its condition on record, has been given the lighter duty of holding a second copy.
