Connect It, and Everything on the Machine Stops.

In St Austell it had become a small ritual. Connect that Seagate, and the PC seizes up with all the lights still on, and it stays like it until you unplug the thing. A folder window would appear and then set, half drawn. Pull the lead and the machine recovered instantly. Eight years of interviews recorded by a local history group sat on the disk, and an entire Sunday went into getting one folder across before it stopped for good — which answered the question he actually cared about: the interviews are still on it, it simply will not hand them over.

Why it happens.

Nothing was wrong with the PC. A single disk had taken up residence at the front of the queue and stayed there. Storage requests are served in turn, so the moment a drive stops answering, Windows sits through one timeout, repeats the request, sits through the next, and every job behind it stacks up. Hence a spreadsheet with no involvement in the Seagate at all locking solid too. That folder he did get over on the Sunday resolved the point that mattered most: the filing structure remained readable, and the interviews really were present. Erasure was not the problem. The drive had simply lost every means of passing its contents on.

Stop spending what is left

That folder had been borrowed, not recovered — prised out of a mechanism already labouring far beyond what it could manage. The counters were explicit: reallocation well advanced, with a pending list growing longer after every fresh attempt. By that stage the only useful act left was to take the power off.

Two goes at an awkward sector, then move along

The imager was given a tight allowance: short timeouts, two attempts, then the address goes in the log and the copy carries on. Clean stretches crossed at full speed. Anything that resisted was noted and reserved for a closing pass, tackled in short sittings and a single head at a time, which let the disk release what was left at a rate it could still manage.

And then play every minute of it

The image mounted at once, and interviews spanning eight years arrived in the sequence they had been recorded in. Closing the job meant playing them through rather than counting them, since a file may weigh exactly what it should and still carry a passage of silence that never got onto the platter.

How it ended up.

Every folder came across, and every folder passed the listening test, including the one that had been half copied. The archive went out on fresh media, with a duplicate set for the group’s secretary. That Seagate is now out of service, and the PC has given nobody any trouble since.

In short: When a machine only hangs with one particular drive attached, that drive has named itself. Copy it once, carefully, and then keep it switched off.
