One Beep, and the Copy Stopped Where It Was.
The awkward questions came out before the parcel was ever posted, which is the right order to do it in. Fifteen years of ceremony work was halfway copied onto the Seagate when the drive quit on a wedding videographer in Tavistock: a single beep and it was off my desktop

Why it happens.
There was no mystery in the beep. A spindle motor pulls at a pack of platters that will not shift, gives up, has one more go and stops: current going in, and nothing moving. The broken seal was the harder half of it. Where somebody else's hands have been inside a drive, the state of the surfaces cannot be judged from outside, and a lab that says otherwise is gambling with money it does not own. Terms can still be settled with the cover shut. Diagnosis is free of charge. One written figure then covers the whole job. Where scored platters are excluded, that is printed for anybody to find rather than buried. And since this cover had to be removed, half of the parts and labour became payable at the outset, the rest only on a result.

How it ran.
The figure is agreed before a tool is lifted
Not a screw moved until he had been given every figure: how far a free assessment goes, what a written quotation obliges us to, the effect of scored platters on that figure, and the half payable once a cover must be lifted. A broken seal goes into the first email we send, never into small print at the foot of one. He asked bluntly and was answered bluntly. Surfaces nobody has yet looked at cannot be judged by anybody, ourselves very much included.
Free the heads, and read around what was done before
Nothing would turn because the sliders had come to rest flat on the surfaces and bonded there, locking the entire stack. Once it was taken off the drive and put under a microscope, the history showed: a donor stack whose part number and label did not match, an old contact ring round the third platter, and debris that had no right to be inside a sealed assembly.
One run, lasting as long as it lasts
After the pack was freed, it was able to get up to full reading speed and maintain this speed throughout the process, so the entire image was read in a single pass and the power was never cut. For nearly all areas of the disk a reasonable read rate was maintained. Only the area at or near the old contact ring (as the quote had warned) produced very little data.
How it turned out.
Fifteen years of finished ceremony masters were returned to him, along with most of his raw footage. However, there was one folder containing the first weddings he ever shot, which lay directly over the contact ring and could not produce any readable data, so he had five rather uncomfortable phone calls to make. This possibility was included in the quote before he committed to anything.
